Fishpot Chert

Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Fishpot chert is primarily light to dark brown and medium to dark gray in color.  Outcrops are usually a rich dark brown and sometimes dark brownish gray to almost black.  High quality almost resembles a bluish gray chalcedony.  Light banding may be present along with small bluish gray chalcedony inclusions.

Fine grain

Luster: Waxy to glossy

Translucency:  Opaque

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: ostracods

Patina: Light color banding increases with increased patina.

Fishpot chert is associated with the Fishpot Limestone Member of the  Monongahela Formation.  Primary outcroppings at the border of Jefferson, Harrison, and Belmont counties in Ohio (along Short Creek banks) with secondary outcroppings in bordering Ohio County, West Virginia and Washington County, Pennsylvania.
