Franz Valley Obsidian occurs in the Franz Valley of the North Coastal Ranges, Napa County, California.  Primary outcroppings occur on the east slope of Devils Kitchen overlooking the Franz Valley and on the Napa and Sonoma County line near Franz Valley School Road.

Many prehistoric quarries have been located in the Franz Valley and artifacts has been found at sites.  Franz Valley Obsidian has a unique trace element signature with barium concentrations exceeding 600 PPM.
