Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:    The color ranges from white to cream or light yellow to tan and medium brown.  A series of non-parallel and intersecting dark brown lines run through the material giving a striated appearance.  Artifacts made with this material generally has these darker brown bands appearing jagged and interspersed across the faces.

Texture: 
Earthy to chalky

Luster:

Silica Fabrics / Fossils:  Echinder plates, bryozoan colonies, brachiopods, and tentaculites.  

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces a variety of pink and reddish hues,

Jeffersonville Chert is associated with the Jeffersonville Limestone formation of Indiana and Ohio.  This chert is found all over the south central and south eastern Indiana.  It occurs along the Whitewater River valley and spreads into Darke, Preble, Butler, and Hamilton Counties of Ohio, along the Great Miami River and its tributaries.  Primary outcroppings are along Coffee Creek in Jennings County, Indiana.
