Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Kornthal Chert is a brecciated to conglomeritic material ranging in color from a pinkish gray, to red most commonly, but blue, yellow, brown, and white may be present.  Inclusions of white chert or quartz is often present.

Texture: 
Medium to very fine grain

Luster: Dull to waxy

Kornthal Chert is associated with the McNairy Formation of Missouri and Illinois.  Primary outcroppings occur in Union and Alexander counties, County, Illinois.  Occurs into Missouri and Kentucky.  Kornthal Chert is a local chert rarely being utilized outside the source area.
