Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Peernal Chert (agate) ranges from a white to pearly gray with a black banding occurring towards the bottom of the formation and changing in color to a translucent yellow, pink, and red with spots of white or pearly gray.  Dendritic and amorphous discoloration rages from black to red, blue, and yellow.

Pedernal Chert is associated with the Pedernal Chert Member of the Abiquiu Tuff Formation of New Mexico.  Primary exposures occur on the San Pedro Mountain about 7 miles south of Gallina, New Mexico and on the slopes of Cerro Pedernal in the Charma Valley in northern New Mexico.
