Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Sky Hill chert is homogenous and ranges in color from a light brown or tan to black.  The most common color is gray.

Texture: 
Fine grain lacking any voids or fracture filled with quartz.

Luster: Dull to waxy

Silica Fabrics / Fossils:

Patina:

Heat Treatment: Heat treatment darkens the color and increases the luster giving a chalcedony appearance.

Sky Hill Chert is associated with the Upper Mercer Formation of the Pottsville group of Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Primary outcroppings at the confluence of the Coffee Creek and Mahoning River in Lawrence County Pennsylvania.  Commonly found in Vinton County, Ohio.
