This type is credited to publications from the Smithsonian institution which referred to this type of point as Calapooya after examples found near the Calapooya mountains.  It has also been called Calapooia after the Calapooia Midden site and Kalapuya after the associated culture.  There are many collector sources that reference this type, but professional publications rarely use this name.  In excavation reports this type is often referred to as “Christmas tree” points or “stemmed point”.  Even though this type has limited professional acknowledgment, it is a unique type attributed to a specific culture and is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small triangular stemmed point with a flattened to thin elliptical cross section.  The blade is primarily excurvate and deeply serrated.  The shoulders are barbed and may have pointed or squared terminations.  The stem may range from straight to contracting with a straight to convex base.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Fern Leaf is a collectors name for a local variant that has deeply serrated or barbed edges and a short contracting stem.

These points are most commonly found in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.  These point may be found from the Cascade mountains to the Oregon coast and the Columbia River to the Calapooya Mountains which was the primary range of the Calapooya culture.
