Coe was a highly respected and pioneering anthropologist in North Carolina archaeology and a preeminent authority on eastern North American anthropology.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.


Hardaway Blade

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small to medium lanceolate point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is excurvate, but may slightly expand towards the base.  The base is concave and commonly has basal grinding and thinning.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 25 to 50 mm (35 mm average), Width - 22 to 35 mm (25 mm average), Thickness - 3 to 6 mm (Coe, 1959)
Commonly Utilized Material:
The primary type of material is based on location, but commonly used materials include quartz, quartzite, cherts, flints, felsite, and jasper.
Additional Comments:

Justice (1987), labels this point the same as the Quad point. However, the distribution is not the same so this point was listed separately here. Some have argued that this may represent a preform for the Hardaway type, but Oliver (1999), feels that this is the first manifestation of the Hardaway type. He feel that this type evolved into the Hardaway Dalton type, followed by the Hardaway Side Notch, and then into the Palmer type.

This point is primarily found southern Virginia and into Mississippi.  This point is found with less frequency from northern Virginia and north and western Mississippi and west.
