Hidden Valley Stemmed
AKA: Rice Contracting Stem (Missouri)
Cluster:
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium to large triangular contracting stemmed point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is commonly very long and may vary from straight to incurvate, however, some examples have a excurvate to recurvate blade.  Left beveling and fine serrations are common on re-sharpened examples.  In examples that have not been re-sharpened, the shoulders are barbed, but are reduced in re-sharpened examples, and could be absent.  Loyd Doty notes that the stem is elongated and contracting with thinning present on one or both sides which may give the appearance of short flutes.  The base is always concave unless damage to the base has occurred.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 60 to 110 mm,  Stem Length - 13 to 17 mm,  Blade Width - 30 to 45 mm,  Stem Width at Shoulders - 18 to 25 mm,  Basal Width - 13 to 18 mm (***Based on small sample size***)
Commonly Utilized Material:
Additional Comments:

This point generally has heavy basal and hafting region grinding which may be a result of characteristics carried over from the Paleo period (W11). This type has many of the same similarities as the newer Standlee point, except that the Standlee point commonly has light basal and hafting region grinding.

This point is similar to the Dickson point However, the Dickson point is manufactured with heat treated materials making the point thinner and generally lacks any hafting region grinding. The Hidden Valley point is an older point and does not used heat treated material. This point is generally thicker and has heavy basal / hafting region grinding.
Distribution:
Distribution Comments:

This point is primarily found north of the North Ozark  Divide in Missouri, but may be found through-out the Ozarks in Missouri.  This point is rarely found in Missouri outside the Ozark region.  This point has been reported into the American Bottoms of Indiana (Higgins, 1990).  Morrows has reported this type into southeastern Iowa.
