Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a medium auriculate lanceolate point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is excurvate with the tip curving in, becoming parallel towards the middle.  This type may vary from having a slightly waist to remaining parallel to the base.  The base is concave with rounded basal corners.  This point has a parallel flaking pattern and lacks any fluting.

Additional Comments:

This type is was identified at the Page-Ladson site.  Examples found at the site were in a disturbed context, but an undisturbed Mastodon was found that had apparent butchering marks on the bone along with chert tools.  Evidence suggest that the points were associated with the Mastodon.  Radiocarbon dating on the Mastodon returned dates of 12,429 RCYBP.  These points are dated from 14,600 to 13,900 years old (Stanford and Bradley, 2012).

This type is not the same as the Un-fluted Clovis that was described by Cameron.  This point dos not have the overall appearance, or the constricted waist that is commonly seen on the Clovis type.

These points are commonly typed as Suwannee type points.  Dunbar and Hemmings suggested that the Suwannee be divided into three sub-categories which include the Suwannee, Suwannee waited, and this type with this type being the oldest of the Suwannee type.

Point Validity:   Provisional Type

Dunbar is an anthropologist and an archaeologist for the Bureau of Archeological Research.  He specializes in Paleo-Indian studies of Florida.  Hemmings is an anthropologist who works as an archaeologist for the Mercyhurst Institute.  This type was named in a professional publication, but may feel that more research is needed on this type due to the proposed age of this type.  This is considered a provisional type.
