Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Cochran Chert is opaque, ranging in color from a medium tan to a dark brown.  It is often banded or mottled, may have a petrified wood appearance.   Quartz inclusion may be present.

Fine grain

Luster: Waxy to vitreous

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Generally absent

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produced a glossy red to yellow color.

Cochran Chert is associated with the upland clays of the Reedstown Member.  Commonly found on ridge tops in western Wisconsin.  Primary outcroppings are found in Buffalo and Trempealeali counties, Wisconsin and into Minnesota.  This is a local chert.
