Color: Leithville Chert ranges in color from black to gray or bluish gray or orange to brown.  white quartz veins or staining of green limonite may be present.

Texture:
 Fine grained with fibrous in centre pods to dense cryptocrystaline quartz


Luster:  Waxy to vitreous

Translucency: Opaque

Silica Fabrics / Fossils:  Micro fossils include algal beds, oolites, and pisoids

Leithville Chert is associated with the Leithville Formation primarily occurring as nodules.  Primary exposures occur near Califon, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Orange County New York, and Sussex County New Jersey.  Formation occurs throughout the southern New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania.
