Lockatong Argillite is associated with the Lockatong Formation, Newark Group of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.  Occurs as beds in Staton Island, New York, Hunterdon, along the Delaware River northwest of Lumberville and Raven Rock to Point Pleasant in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in Mercer, Middlesex, and Somerset counties, New Jersey and into eastern Pennsylvania.  Named for exposures along Lockatong Creek, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
