Mistassini Quartzite is associated with the Temiscamie Formation of the Mistassini Group of central Quebec (most archeology references attribute this to the Colline Blache Formation which is not listed as a formation in Canada).  Primary outcroppings occur along the Temiscamie River in south central Quebec and around Lake Albanel.  No primary sources have been found outside the Temiscamie River Basin, but this material has been traded into Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New England.

Underlying Albanel Formation of the Mistassini Group produces chert.
