Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Westerville Chert ranges from homogeneous to mottled with colors ranging from a pale brown to a light yellowish brown or brownish yellow.  Thin bands of white porcelaneous chert may be present.

Westerville Type A -
Homogenous buff tan color, may have very faint banding with few fossils

Westerville Type B -
Grayer with tan mottling and more fossils present

Texture: 
Course to fine grain

Luster: Chalky to waxy

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces colors of pink or reddish gray.

Distribution:
Westerville Chert is associated with the Westerville Limestone Member of the Cherryvale Shale Formation, Kansas City Group.  Primary outcroppings occur in Leavenworth County, Kansas and throughout the Kansas City area north of the Missouri River.
