Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Allen Creek Chert is mottled and ranges in color from gray, tan, brown, and blue.  May be translucent. 

Texture: 
Medium to fine grain

Luster: Dull to waxy

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Highly fossiliferous.  Fossils include predominantly crinoidal, though sponge spicules and fenestrate bryzoa are common.

Allens Creek Chert is associated with the Floyds Knob limestone member of the Edwardsville Formation, Borden Group of Kentucky and Indiana.  Outcroppings are located in the lower Ohio River valley.  Primary outcroppings are located along Allen Creek, Monroe County, Indiana
