Fowler was a distinguished anthropologist and a retired professor at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.  He is most notable for his excavations at the Cahokia and Modoc Rock-shelter in Illinois.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.


  
Ferry Expanding Stem

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium to large triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is excurvate and most commonly finely serrated.  Shoulder are primarily horizontal, but may be slightly barbed or have a slight upward angle.  The stem is expanding and may have grinding on the hafting area.  The base is most commonly convex and may have a bulbous appearance.  Rarely, the base may be straight.  The base may have light grinding or thinning.  This point has a random flaking pattern. 
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 55 to 120 mm (average 60 to 70 mm),  Stem Length - 12 to 20 mm,  Blade Width - 30 to 44 mm,  Stem Width at Shoulders - 18 to 26 mm,  Max. Stem Width - 20 to 30 mm (***based on small sample size***)

This point was referred to as a Helton point at the Koster site, but this point is older than the Helton point.

William Fowler (1983) discusses two variations to this point,.  The first is more common bulbous stem.  The second variation has a short broad stem, but has sharp basal corner (also called the Barbeau point).
