Kings Projectile Point

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a small to medium (1.25 to 2.75 inches) triangular corner notch point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade varies from excurvate to straight on re-sharpened examples or slightly incurvate on extensively re-sharpened examples.  Fine serrations are commonly present.  The shoulder are barbed and commonly has pointed terminations.  Re-sharpened examples may have reduced barbed.  Wide notches enter from the corner of the preform forming a stem that is expanding with a base that is primarily straight, but may range from slightly convex to slightly concave.  Light basal and hafting region grinding is generally seen.  This point has a random flaking pattern and has been completed with pressure flaking.

Size Measurements:  Total Length - 30 to 70 mm,  Stem Length - 10 to 15 mm,  Blade Width - 22 to 35 mm,  Neck Width - 15 to 20 mm,  Stem Width - 20 to 25 mm

This type has been poorly defined which has resulted in many other types of corner notch points being classified as this type (Ray and Lopinot, 2005).  This has led to confusion regarding the date of this point.  It has been classified as a Middle Archaic to a Woodland point.  Ray has attributed the confusion in dates as being a direct result of being a poorly defined type and being used as a catch-all for small to medium corner notched points.

Age Details:
It has been suggested that this point may range from the Middle Archaic period into the Woodland period.  Radio-carbon dates at the Erwin site have provided dates of 3,230 to 3,120 rcybp and at the Labra Lake Site provided dates of 3,300 - 3,100 rcybp.  The Fire Pit Cave site provided dates of 3,180 to 3,080 rcybp.  It is now thought that this point represents a Late to Terminal Archaic period point.
