Geiger is an avocational archaeologist and a member of the Mississippi Archaeological Society.  This type was identified and named in his survey of the Leaf River basin and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.


San Patrice Leaf River

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small to medium triangular auriculate point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is primarily straight and is usually serrated.  The shoulders are weak to absent and at an upward angle.  Shallow notches enter low on the blade forming a short expanding stem.  The base is deeply concave forming basal ears.  The base is thinned by removal of two or three channel flakes which extends up to the face of the point.  Basal grinding is commonly seen.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 20 to 50 mm (average 35 mm),  Blade Width - 20 to 32 mm, Thickness - 3 - 8 mm (average 5 mm).
Commonly Utilized Material:
The most common material is Citronelle Chert, and less commonly Tallahatta Quartzite
